Films A’mour

I must admit that I am a sucker for a good ole sentimental love film [i.e. chick flick]!  To me a really great film must have a good plot, rich dialogue, and it should move me emotionally…and the same holds true for a chick flick.  Here are my top 5 favorites of all time!

A poor and passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom. They soon are separated by their social differences.

Noah:   “I am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who's ever lived: I've loved another with all my heart and soul; and to me, this has always been enough.”

Chronicles the life of the young Jewish girl, Hadassah, who goes on to become the Biblical Esther, the Queen of Persia, and saves the Jewish nation from annihilation at the hands of its arch enemy, while winning the heart of the fiercely handsome King Xerxes.

Queen Esther:  “My father told me: ‘It takes the glory of God to conceal the matter and the honor of   kings to search it out.’”
King Xerxes:  “Then marry me...and we shall spend an eternity discovering this truth...together.”

3. August Rush
A drama with fairy tale elements, where an orphaned musical prodigy uses his gift as a clue to finding his birth parents.

August Rush:  “Sometimes the world tries to knock it out of you. But I believe in music the way that some people believe in fairy tales. I like to imagine that what I hear came from my mother and father. Maybe the notes I hear, are the same ones they heard, the night they met. Maybe that's how they found each other. Maybe that's how they'll find me. I believe that once upon a time, long ago, they heard the music and followed it.”

4. My Girl
Vada Sultenfuss is obsessed with death. Her mother is dead, and her father runs a funeral parlor. She is also in love with her English teacher, and joins a poetry class over the summer just to impress him. Thomas J., her best friend, is "allergic to everything", and sticks with Vada despite her hangups.

Vada:  “Why do you think people want to get married?”
Thomas J.:  “When you get old, you just have to.”
Watch Now On Amazon ($2.99)
A classic fairy tale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a kindly grandfather).

Westley:   "I told you I would always come for you. Why didn't you wait for me?"
Buttercup:   "Well...you were dead."
Westley:   "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while."
Buttercup:   "I will never doubt again."

[[All night long on my bed
I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
“Have you seen the one my heart loves?”
Scarcely had I passed them
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go.]]

Proverbs 19:11 ♥

My food for thought today:

[[A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.]]
New International Version (©1984)

[[Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs.]]
New Living Translation (©2007)

[[Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.]]
English Standard Version (©2001)

[[A man's discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.]]
New American Standard Bible (©1995)

[[The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.]]
King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)

[[A person with good sense is patient, and it is to his credit that he overlooks an offense.]]
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

And my personal favorite...{DRUM ROLL}...

[[Smart people know how to hold their tongue; it is their grandeur to forgive and forget.]]
THE MESSAGE (Paraphrase)

God continues to convict me about my tendency to be overly-sensitive and to over-analyze things in my mind. Sometimes it is something someone has actually said or done that has offended me, but MOST of the time, it is something I have perceived as an offense to me and the other person does not even have a clue that I am turning it over in my mind and brewing up some real "stinking thinking."  Is anybody with me on this? Can I get a witness!?!?

So, I came back to the old, trusty Proverb 19:11! It basically says to me:

1.    Sensible people are not overly sensitive - they don't get angered or upset over every little offense - real or perceived. (v.11a)
2.   When they are offended, they make a conscious decision to forgive the offense and put it behind them. This is their glory...their edge, if you will! (v.11b)

So, this is what I am striving to do more and more each day, with the Lord's help, of course! My stinking thinking used to be Satan's biggest tool against me, but then I learned how to fight it with the Sword of the Spirit!

[[For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension [vain imagination, speculation, lofty thought or human reasoning] that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.]]
2 Corinthians 10:3-5,
New International Version (©1984)

I just need to remember to capture these thoughts as soon as they come and not even entertain the devil's lame-o schemes! I've been letting him slip some fiery arrows past my Sword lately and enough is enough!!!

Amen!

Uggghhh...

This is how I feel today. LSU got their butts handed to 'em by the Tide last night. Then the weather turned chilly and rainy and the head cold I thought I was almost over dropped into my chest. I am periodically breaking into coughing fits that last a couple of minutes and I feel like I've been run over by a truck.  Needless to say, I did not make it out of the house today! Sigh...

Well, the good news is, I have a roof over my head, my belly's full and I'm warm.  And I'm about to curl up with my new book "The Magnificent Obsession."  Life is good...even when it's not...ya know?  Thank you God! [Please help me to remember to count my blessings, even on my bad days!]

[[Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.]]

My world. My chance to make it better.

After much prayer and deliberation, I am so pleased to announce that I have accepted a one year assignment as an AmeriCorps VISTA.  The organization I will be serving at is BRACE [Be Ready Alliance Coordinating For Emergencies] here in Pensacola.

What Is AmeriCorps?  AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National & Community Service.  It provides opportunities that make a big difference in a person's life and in the lives of others. It’s a chance to apply one's skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.

What Does a VISTA Do?  VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more.  With passion, commitment, and hard work, they create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.

The Benefits of VISTA Service.  By serving through VISTA, a person gains new skills, friends, and experiences—plus the satisfaction that comes from helping others. During service, a modest living allowance, health care, and other benefits are provided. And, upon completion of service, the choice to receive either a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a cash stipend.

A Proud History of Service.  Did you know that President John F. Kennedy came up with the idea for VISTA? Or that VISTAs have played a key role in establishing many of the best-known anti-poverty programs, including Head Start, Upward Bound, and the credit union system?

What is BRACE?  BRACE’s Mission is to reduce loss of life, injury, property damage, environmental impact and economic loss due to disaster through fostering communication, cooperation, collaboration and coordination among community, faith-based, non-profit, private and public organizations active in one or more phases of emergency management.  Their purpose is to engage the community in disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Their vision is to make our community the most disaster-resilient community in America.

How prepared are you and your community in the event of a natural disaster, terrorist attack or other national security breach? Take this Readiness Survey.

I am very excited to see how God is going to use this program to impact lives in my new community of Pensacola. I'm so honored to be used by Him in any way!  Thank you so much to all who have prayed with me and for me and encouraged me in my journey thus far. It means so much to me!

Stay tuned for updates. I will be attending a 4-day Preservice Orientation & Training Seminar on February 14-17, 2011 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in beautiful Buckhead in Atlanta! This will kick off my year of service.  Sweeet!!!

To all my loved ones, supporters and encouragers, be blessed! I love y'all!!!

[[You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.]]
